In this tutorial, we would be learning how to manipulate a basic image into a grunge composition using various textures, fonts and basic shapes.

Step 1: Basic Image

First of all, you would need a photograph of the beach.

Once downloaded, bring the image on the canvas. Go to Image, Adjustments and choose the photo filter option. Use the following details.

Step 2: Text Tool

Pick up the text tool and go crazy. Run your ideas on the canvas and play around with the fonts. Use different fonts for your wordings and add a little funk to your image.

Step 3: Shape Layer

Use the Rectangle Tool and make two shape layers around your text like shown below.

Step 4: Newspaper Layer

Again pick up your text tool and start using different fonts for your text. Keep your text within the shape created in the previous step. You can even use different font sizes to highlight the main points in your text.

Step 5: Wrinkled Paper Texture

Now you would need a wrinkled paper texture.

Step 6: Blending Options

Bring the image on the canvas and resize the image by pressing CTRL T. Reduce the opacity of the layer to 80% and change the blending options of the layer to Hard Light.

Step 7: Soft Light

Duplicate the texture layer. Set the opacity to 100% and change the blending options to Soft Light.

Step 8: Apply Hue

Duplicate the texture layer once more and change the blending options to Hue. Keep the opacity of the layer to 100%

Step 9: Final Touches

Duplicate the layer once more. Now pick up the soft brush tool with 0% hardness. Apply the brushes around the edges. Press CTRL U and increase the saturation of the image to 80. You can use various other filters and effects to increase the sharpness of the image. Once you are done, change the blending options of the layer to Overlay. That’s it.

In this tutorial, we will learn how to create Nature girl photo manipulation in Photoshop. First of all, let’s have a look at our final result.

Step 5:-

After that, paste the flowers to our main image.

In this tutorial, you would be learning how to manipulate a poker card and use various filters to generate the flaming effect in Photoshop. Below is displayed what we are aiming to create.

Step 1: Card Image

Download any card image from the internet and crop out the card using the lasso tool.

Step 2: Floral Background

Next, we would need a floral background image. Bring the image on the canvas and crop out the pattern from the background.

Step 3: Background

Once you have separated the floral pattern from the background, make a new layer and position it behind the pattern. Color the background dark green using the paint bucket tool.

Step 4: Poker Card

Bring the Poker Card layer on the canvas. Press CTRL U and tick on the check box titled “colorize”. Match the card with the background.

Step 5: Perspective

Right click on the card layer and press CTRL T. Then second click on the selection and choose the perspective option. Change the perspective of the card to add a little depth to the image.

Step 6: Liquify

Once done with the perspective of the layer, go to Filter and choose the Liquify Option. Select the Turbulence Tool and apply it on the card to give it a melting look.

Step 7: Fire Image

Now bring the fire image on the canvas. Press Control and right click on the card layer to automatically load the selection. Then go back to the fire layer and simply press CTRL C and then CTRL V. This would copy paste the selection from the fire image.

Step 8: Blending Options

Once the fire card layer has been made, select that layer and change the blending options from Normal to Hard Light.

Step 9: Gaussian Blur

Copy the fire layer and go to Filter, Blur and select Gaussian Blur. Keep the radius to 50px and move the layer behind the card.

Step 10: Backdrop on Fire

Move the fire layer below the background layer and change the blending mode of the layer to Hard Light. Similarly select the backdrop layer and change the blending mode to Soft Light.

Step 11: Liquify and Final Touches

Select the background pattern layer and go to Filter and choose Liquify. Select the Turbulence Tool and apply it all over the pattern to give it a melting look. Once this filter is applied, make a new layer and color the borders black by using the brush tool. Now paint the area of the card white with 0% hardness. Go to the blending options of that layer and choose Overlay and you are done.

For this tutorial, you would need a picture of a model together with vector art, the combination of which (with the help of a few lighting effects) would look something like this:

Step 1: Basic Image

Import the image of a model on the canvas and use the lasso tool to make crop out the model from the background.

Step 2: Merging with the New Background

Make a new layer and use a radial blur from gray tones to black. After that, select the cropped out model layer, go to Image, Adjustments and click on Levels. Use the following details for merging the model with the background.

Step 3: Vector Art and Gaussian Blur

You can download various types of vector art online. Include any sort of vector art images to the background. Once you have completed the arrangement, duplicate the layer. Select the duplicated layer and go to Filter, Blur and apply the Gaussian Blur effect.

Step 4: Color Light

Create a new layer between the model and the vector art layer. Select the Elliptical Marquee tool and set the Feather option to 30 px. Fill the selection with purple color as shown below. Change the blending options of that layer to “Screen” and keep the opacity of the layer to 40%.

Step 5: Adding More Colors

Repeat the same step to add more colors to the canvas.

Step 6: Selection

Make a new layer and position it above the color light and behind the model. Make a rectangular selection as shown below and fill it with white color.

Step 7: Liquify and Smudge Tool

Select the newly created layer and go to Filter and choose Liquify. Randomly distort the image anyway you like and apply the filter. Once you are back on the canvas, select the smudge tool and apply on the filtered layer. The following effect would result.

Step 8: Finishing Touches

Make a new layer at the very top and using the brush tool, color the edges of the canvas to make a border effect. Keep the hardness of the tool to 0% and apply white color on the face of the model. Change the blending options of the layer to Overlay. Duplicate all layers and merge them into a single layer. Press CTRL U and increase the Saturation of the image to add sharpness to the image.

In this tutorial, we would be working with different patterns and making a camouflage dress like displayed below.

Step 1: Pattern

First of all, you would need a patterned background. For this tutorial, we would be going with a hippy theme.

Step 2: Model

Next, you would need a model picture. I have used the one displayed below according to the theme I am using.

Step 3: Extraction

First of all, cut out the model and separate her from the white image using the lasso tool. Then bring her on the canvas with the background pattern that we had previously downloaded. Copy the model layer and extract the body of the model (her hands and face) from the dress like shown below.

Step 4: Highlights

Duplicate the dress layer. Select the duplicated layer, go to Filter, Blur and choose the Gaussian Blur effect. Keep the radius to 2px in order to retain the outline of the dress. Change the blending options of the duplicated layer to “Screen”.

Step 5: Shadows

Duplicate the background layer and move that layer below the dress layer. By pressing CTRL and right click on the dress layer, you would load the selection of the mask layer. Using the burn tool, simply apply it on the edges of the dress layer in order to make the shadow effect as shown below.

Step 6: Unhide Body Layer

Now simply unhide the body layer and your camouflage dress is complete. To further add to the image, you can extract the hair using the lasso tool and move it to a new layer. By pressing CTRL U and clicking on the check box titled “Colorize” you can change the hair color of the model. To add more depth to the image, go to the layer style and add an inner shadow effect to her hair. That’s it!

In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to do suspenseful image manipulation for creating the gunshot effect in Photoshop. For this, we require two images, 1) Gun pointing man and 2) Gun shot. Below is displayed what we want to create.

Step – 1:

First of all, open photo of man pointing a gun.
Let’s open the file. Click File >> Open, then locate your file, select and click open to open it.

Step – 2:

Now Place photo of gunshot hole on glass.
To place it, click File, select image and click place. The image will be placed with transform tool being activated. Make sure the placed image is just above the gun point.

Step – 3:

Now, in this step, select the just placed image layer and select screen in blending mode in the layer palette.

Step – 4:

Now we will use distort effect to give it real effect. We will use displace filter. Before using it, we need to create displacement map, which will tell displace filter about how it should distort image.
First, create new layer for displacement map.
Duplicate the placed layer by right clicking on it and select duplicate layer.
Also, in new version of Photoshop your placed layer will automatically be smart layer. Smart layer is shown by icon on layer. If so, then rasterize it by right click and select Rasterize Layer.
Note: filters can’t be applied to smart layer so layer needs to rasterized to apply filter.

Step – 5:

Now we are adding contrast to layer. Select top layer in layer palette and click Image >> Adjustments >> Levels.
Fill settings as shown in the window.

Step – 6:

Now we will use emboss filter.
Click Filter >> Stylize >> Emboss.
Fill values as in screenshot.

Step – 7:

Now in layer palette, select overlay in the blending mode of displacement layer (the last layer we worked on)
Select color #808080 for foreground, now select brush tool and paint over areas where you don’t want bumps. The bumps will be removed from the areas you paint.

Step – 8:

After finishing painting bumps, change your layer blending mode back to normal from overlay and then click File >> Save As, then save file as to “displace map”. See screenshot.
Then delete top layer with bump texture. After that, select background layer.

Step – 9:

Then after deleting top displacement layer, convert background layer to smart object.
To convert background to smart object:
1. Right click background layer in layer palette.
2. Choose “convert to smart object”.

Step – 10:

Then in next step, we will use distort filter. Click Filter >> Distort >> Displace. Then fill in values as shown in the screenshot.
Then select displacement map file that you have saved earlier and click open.

Step – 11:

Now again readjust displace settings as displayed in the screen shot (filter>>distort>>displace).

Step – 12:

Now create new layer to add vignette effect.
Create new layer (Layer >> New Layer) and move it to top in the layer palette. Then Fill with white color on the layer. To fill white color, select the layer you have just created and click Edit >> Fill with white color. See screenshot. Now change this layer’s blending mode to multiply in layer palette.

Step – 13:

Now we shall add a vignette effect.
To do this, click Filter >> Distort >> Lens correction.
Now adjust as shown in the screenshot. If you don’t get nice result then you can slightly vary amount and midpoint than this screenshot.

Step – 14:

Now you will see dark around the edge of the gun. If you see too much dark around the gun then you can lower the opacity of this new layer. Precisely, you will notice this more if your image is in daylight or other background than black.

Step – 15:

Now let’s cool this image with photo filter.
Select top layer and click Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Photo Filter. Then in the photo filter box, set color to cyan or #00d2ff and density – 100%.
See screenshot. Then Change blending mode of this layer in layer palette to soft light.

Step – 16:

Your final image should look like this.

This tutorial is particularly useful for the beginners, who want to add a vintage effect to the photographs.

Step 1: Find a Picture

Pick any picture you want to edit and bring it on the canvas. For this particular tutorial, we would be using the following picture of a girl.

Step 2: Dust And Scratches

Now select the layer and go to ‘Filter’, ‘Noise’ and select the ‘Dust and Scratches’ option. Once the new window opens, keep the Threshold to zero and increase the Radius to 2.

Step 3: Gaussian Blur

Duplicate the background. Select the new layer and go to Filter, Blur and choose the Gaussian Blur option. Once the new window opens, keep the radius to 4.

Step 4: Grunge Patterns

Now you would be needing a grunge pattern so download it. Once downloaded, bring it on to the canvas and resize it according to your picture. Desaturate the layer by pressing CTRL U and setting the saturation of this particular layer to -100. Once that is done, go to the blending options of the layer and choose “Overlay” instead of “Normal”.

Step 5: Vintage Background

Once you are done with the grunge background, it is the time to add another background to your image to give it the grunge feel. I have used the background displayed below for this tutorial.

Once downloaded, bring the image to the canvas and resize it as you want. Go to the blending options of the layer and choose “Overlay” instead of the default setting.

Step 6: Outlook

Once you are done adding both the backgrounds, this is what your image should look like.

Step 7: Sepia Effect

Simply press CTRL U. Once the new window pops up, tick the check box titled “Colorize” and input the following values.

Step 8: Finishing Touches

Once you are done with the image, it would be better to do some final touches to add depth to the image. You can increase the sharpness by increasing the saturation or contrast of the image and you are all done.

You can create the watercolor effect in a number of ways using the stunning features of Photoshop. In this tutorial, you would be able to sharpen your image manipulation techniques along with layer masking principles and a number of other cool effects.

Step 1 – Right From The Basics

You can select any of your favorite character, which you want to work on. For this particular tutorial, we would be working on Che Guevara.

Step 2 – Brightness/Contrast

First of all, you need to do a little color correction before we add the watercolors. Go to Image, Adjustments and select the Brightness/Contrast option. Use the following frequencies for the layer.

Step 3 - Filter

Duplicate the layer. Select the new layer and go to Filter and open the Filter Gallery. Once the new window opens choose the Watercolor effect in the directory titled “Artistic”.

Step 4 – Threshold

Go to your original layer. Once selected, go to Image, Adjustments and open the Threshold dialogue. Once the window opens, use the following details.

Step 5 – Layers

Choose the color in which you applied the Watercolor filter. Go to the blending options and change the value from Normal to Multiply. Once that is done, select both the layers (as shown in the second screenshot) and press CTRL E. This would merge both the layers into one single layer.

Step 6 – Watercolor Splash

For this, your image manipulation techniques would come in handy. Download splash images of watercolor.

Now duplicate the layers and fill up the canvas. Merge all the duplicated layers into one single layer and position that layer right at the top.

Step 7 – Layer Mask

Apply the layer mask on the splash image. Copy the original image onto the mask and press CTRL I to invert the colors of the copied image.

Step 8 – Output

Just simply go out of the masked layer and see the result.

Step 9 – Background

Now add any kind of background image in the canvas. I have used the grunge backdrop for this tutorial.

Step 10 – Merging With The Backdrop

Simply select the background layer. Go to the blending options and change the value from Normal to “Linear Burn”.

Step 11 – Final Touches

Make a new layer and fill the color with white. Reduce the opacity of the layer and apply the gussian blur effect. After that, make another new layer and make the borders as shown below. Change the blending options from Normal to Overlay. You can play with the Saturation and Hue of the image and see what looks better on your canvas.
